Day trips and weekends with kids in Chiang Mai (2026)

The weekend rotation that works: half-day trips, full-day trips, overnight escapes. Where families actually go, with costs and what fits each age.

One of the things families relocating to Chiang Mai discover quickly is how much there is to do on weekends within an hour's drive. Mountain forests, waterfalls, elephant sanctuaries, hot springs, hill-tribe villages, lakes, caves. Chiang Mai is a strong base for active-family lifestyles in a way most cities its size are not.

This guide is the practical rotation we recommend to relocating families: half-day, full-day, and overnight options, what fits each age, what to expect, and what it costs.

Half-day trips (within 30 to 45 minutes)

For tired parents, hot afternoons, or quick Sunday outings.

  • Doi Suthep temple + Royal Park (Rajapruek). 30 to 40 minutes from central Chiang Mai. The temple has a Buddhist site at altitude with mountain views. Royal Park nearby has botanical gardens easy with strollers. Together a good half-day. Foreigner entry ~50 to 100 THB each.
  • Huay Tung Tao Lake. 20 minutes north. Wading and play in shallow water, bamboo huts for lunch, small kayak rentals. ฿50 entry. Bring a change of clothes.
  • The Walking Streets (Sunday in Old City, Saturday in Wua Lai). Late afternoon and evening. Music, food, crafts. Great for kids 5+, manageable with toddlers in a stroller.
  • Night Safari (Chiang Mai Night Safari). Afternoon and early evening. Mixed reviews on animal welfare; some families love it for kids, others skip it for ethical reasons.

Full-day trips (1 to 1.5 hours away)

  • Mae Sa Valley. 45 to 60 minutes northwest. A cluster of family attractions: Mae Sa Waterfall (7 tiers, easy hike), Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, Orchid farm, several adventure-style parks. Good with kids 3+.
  • Elephant Nature Park (or similar ethical sanctuary). 1.5 hours north. Half or full-day. Kids 4+ recommended. Book online 1 to 2 weeks ahead, especially weekends. ฿2,000 to ฿3,500 per adult; kids often half-price.
  • Sticky Waterfalls (Bua Tong). 60 minutes northeast. The mineral surface lets you walk up the falls. Magical with kids 5+. Free entry. Avoid weekends if you can; go early morning.
  • Doi Inthanon National Park. 1.5 to 2 hours southwest. Thailand's highest peak (2,565m). Cool air, the famous twin pagodas, several waterfalls, easy nature trails. Good full-day for kids 4+. Park entry ฿300 per adult, ฿150 per child.
  • Tham Chiang Dao caves. 90 minutes north. Big atmospheric cave system with lighting. Easy walking. Kids 5+. ฿40 entry.

Weekend trips (2 to 3 hour drive, overnight)

  • Pai. 3 hours through 762 mountain curves. Beautiful, hippie-bohemian, hot springs and waterfalls. The drive is tough on motion-sick kids; van rides are worse than self-drive. Stay 2 nights to make it worth the road.
  • Mae Hong Son. 6 to 7 hours via Pai, or fly. Quieter than Pai, dramatic landscape, hill-tribe villages, Tham Lod Cave. Best for older kids who can tolerate the drive.
  • Chiang Rai. 3 hours northeast. Famous temples (White Temple, Blue Temple, Black House), the Mekong River, hill-tribe areas. Doable as a long day, but overnight is better with kids.
  • Lampang. 1.5 hours south. Smaller, slower, traditional. Horse-drawn carriages, ceramics tours. Underrated for a quick weekend.
  • Lamphun. 30 minutes south. Old Lanna capital. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai. Half-day historical outing for older kids who like temples and history.

Seasonal considerations

  • October to early February: Best season. Cool, dry, blue skies. AQI generally under 100. All outdoor activities work.
  • February to mid-April: Burning season. Air quality bad March, hot. Skip outdoor mountain trips above moderate elevation. Lower-elevation morning trips OK with masks. See our burning season with kids guide.
  • Late April to September: Hot and wet. Mornings (before 10am) work for outdoor activities. Rainy-season waterfalls are spectacular. Avoid afternoon thunderstorm windows.

Costs for a typical family-of-four weekend
