The best day trips from Chiang Mai (2026): mountains, temples and beyond

The White Temple at Chiang Rai, the mountain town of Pai, the roof of Thailand, ethical elephants, ancient Lanna temples, and waterfalls you can climb: Chiang Mai is the perfect base for day trips. The complete guide to the best, with distances and how to do them.

Chiang Mai is one of the best bases in Thailand for day trips. Within a few hours in any direction you can reach a dazzling contemporary temple, the highest mountain in the country, an ethical elephant sanctuary, ancient Lanna temples, mountain towns, tea plantations, and waterfalls you can climb. Whether you want temples, nature, culture, or animals, the day trips here deliver. This guide is the map: the best of them, with distances, how to do each, and what is worth your time.

This is the hub of our day-trips cluster. The deeper guides cover Chiang Rai (the White, Blue, and Black landmarks), Pai, Lampang, Lamphun and the craft villages, and the honest reality of which day trips are worth it.

Chiang Rai: the headline trip

The most popular full-day trip. Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple), a dazzling contemporary work in white and mirror-glass, the cobalt Blue Temple, the dark, strange Black House (Baan Dam), and the giant Big Buddha at Wat Huay Pla Kang make Chiang Rai a feast of striking sights, often with Singha Park or the Choui Fong tea plantation added. A long day (3 hours each way), best as a guided tour. See our Chiang Rai guide.

The mountains and nature

The nature day trips are superb: Doi Inthanon (the roof of Thailand, with cloud forest and waterfalls), the climbable Sticky Waterfall, the mountain village of Mae Kampong, the quiet town of Chiang Dao with its cave temple, and the Huai Nam Dang sea of cloud. See our nature getaways and national parks guides.

Ethical elephants

One of the most rewarding day trips is a visit to an ethical, hands-off elephant sanctuary, where you observe and help care for rescued elephants rather than ride them. A highlight for families and a Chiang Mai signature. Choose a genuinely ethical, no-riding sanctuary; see our elephant sanctuaries guide.

Ancient temples and crafts

Closer and underrated: Lamphun (the ancient Hariphunchai kingdom, 40 minutes away), Lampang (horse carts and one of the finest Lanna temples), and the craft villages of Bo Sang (umbrellas) and San Kamphaeng. See our Lampang and Lamphun guide.

Pai: better as an overnight

Pai is wonderful but three hours away on a road of 762 curves, so a day trip means six hours of driving for a few hours there. It rewards a slower visit; go for two or three nights instead. See our Pai guide for the honest take.

How to do day trips

  • Far trips (Chiang Rai, Doi Inthanon, Pai): a guided tour or a private car and driver removes the logistics.
  • Closer trips (Sticky Waterfall, Mae Kampong, Lamphun, crafts): self-drive by car or scooter for freedom.
  • Go in the cool season for clear views; avoid the burning season.
  • Start early to make the most of the day and beat afternoon rain.
