Gay nightlife in Chiang Mai (2026): bars, clubs, drag, saunas

Adam's Apple, Soho, Free Guy, Rainbow Bar, House of Male and more. Where gay men actually go out in Chiang Mai, when each venue is busiest, drink prices, drag-show culture, sauna scene, and the honest read on each spot.

Chiang Mai's gay nightlife is concentrated in two clusters: around Chiang Mai Gate on the south side of Old City, and along Loi Kroh Road. Most well-known gay bars, drag-show venues, and saunas walk between these. This guide covers the venues that matter, what each is known for, when each is busiest, and the practical details that aren't always obvious from Google.

For the broader LGBT context (culture, community, lesbian and trans scene, healthcare, marriage), see our LGBT-friendly Chiang Mai complete guide.

The main strip

Most of Chiang Mai's gay nightlife sits in an area roughly bounded by Chiang Mai Gate to the south, Loi Kroh Road, and the southern part of Old City. Walking distance covers most bars. Some venues are a few blocks outside this core but still close.

Bars and clubs

Adam's Apple

The most consistently popular gay bar in Chiang Mai. Long-running, tourist-accessible. Known for nightly drag and cabaret performances. Two or three show times per evening (typically 9:30pm, 10:30pm, sometimes a third at 11:30pm). Reservations recommended on weekends, especially during high season.

Scene: Mix of tourists and locals. Tourists slightly more dominant on weekends and during peak season. Mid-energy, friendly, focused on the shows.

Drink prices: Beers ฿100 to ฿180. Cocktails ฿200 to ฿380.

How to find: Address: Vichayanon Road area. Google or ask any tuk-tuk driver; well-known.

Free Guy Bar

Long-standing gay bar with regular show nights and mixed entertainment. Less drag-cabaret-heavy than Adam's Apple, more general-bar atmosphere with occasional performances. Friendly bartenders, regulars-friendly culture.

Scene: Mix of long-term residents and tourists. Less tourist-show-focused than Adam's Apple.

Drink prices: Beers ฿90 to ฿150. Cocktails ฿180 to ฿320.

Soho Bar

Gay-friendly bar in the Old City area. Smaller, more cocktail-and-conversation-focused than the show bars. Good fit for a quieter night out or pre-game before bigger venues.

Scene: Mix of expats and tourists. Less drag-show focus.

Drink prices: Beers ฿100 to ฿180. Cocktails ฿220 to ฿380.

Rainbow Bar

Casual, smaller venue. Less production than the major show bars. Good fit for nights when you want to just drink and chat without organized entertainment.

Scene: Local-leaning. Quieter weeknights, busier weekends.

Drink prices: Beers ฿80 to ฿150. Cocktails ฿180 to ฿300.

House of Male, Glam, Bear Bar, and others

The scene has several other established venues with varying nightly schedules. House of Male combines bar and sauna operations at some locations. Glam and Bear Bar serve different sub-scenes (Glam tends younger and more dance-oriented; Bear Bar attracts older crowd and bear community). Check current status before visiting; some venues have changed locations or hours.

Drag shows and cabaret

Chiang Mai has an established drag scene with professionalized performances. Most shows feature:

  • Choreographed group numbers
  • Solo lip-sync performances
  • Comedy bits (often multi-language, with some shows in English)
  • Costume and character work
  • Themes (Disney, Broadway, K-pop, Thai pop, 90s pop, etc.)

Show times: typically 9:30pm, 10:30pm, sometimes 11:30pm. Adam's Apple has the most consistent show schedule. Other venues run shows on specific nights.

Tipping the performers is normal and welcomed. ฿100 to ฿500 to a performer who does a great number is appropriate. Bills are sometimes handed directly during shows.

Saunas

Several gay saunas operate in Chiang Mai. Common features:

  • Entry fees ฿200 to ฿500
  • Lockers, showers, dry sauna, steam room
  • Cruising-friendly common areas
  • Various opening hours (some 1pm to 11pm, some longer)

Notable saunas include House of Male (combined operation with bar). Several others operate in the Old City and along Loi Kroh Road. Check current status and hours via Facebook, Google, or LGBT forums before visiting; this category sees more frequent venue changes than bars.

Sauna etiquette and safety

  • HIV testing and safer-sex norms are increasingly mainstream in Thai sauna culture, but still vary by venue.
  • Most saunas accept condoms; bring your own if you want a specific brand.
  • Don't share substances. Drug use at saunas is illegal in Thailand and has serious legal consequences.
  • Cash for entry; some venues accept cards.
  • Lockers exist but most don't trust valuables to them; bring minimum.

Mixed gay-friendly bars

Beyond exclusively-gay venues, many bars in Nimman and central Chiang Mai are openly LGBT-friendly without making it the central marketing point. Cocktail bars, rooftop bars, wine bars, and several jazz/live music venues welcome LGBT customers without segregation. Most LGBT residents alternate between gay-specific venues for community and mixed bars for variety.

Safety and what to watch for

  • Loi Kroh has scam-flagged venues. Some are heterosexual-targeted, but verify any unfamiliar venue against our ScamShield database before going in.
  • Don't leave drinks unattended. Standard nightlife precaution everywhere.
  • Be cautious of "freelance" workers in bars. Some bars have implicit or explicit sex-work culture. Know what you're walking into. Misunderstandings can be expensive.
  • Padded bills happen. Always check the bill before paying. Itemize if it doesn't add up.
  • Use Grab or Bolt for transport home. Don't walk alone late.
  • Don't carry illegal substances. Thai drug laws are severe. Even small amounts can lead to serious legal consequences.
  • Verify saunas via current sources. Hours, status, and even ownership can change.

What's NOT really in Chiang Mai (vs Bangkok or Pattaya)

  • Massive clubs: Chiang Mai is smaller. No equivalent of Bangkok's GOD or Soi Twilight.
  • Same density of saunas: Fewer options than Bangkok's gay scene.
  • Beach gay scene: Obvious. Chiang Mai is mountain city, not beach.
  • Same wedding-tourism infrastructure as Phuket: Phuket has more LGBT wedding planners. Chiang Mai's wedding scene is growing post-2025.

What's particularly good in Chiang Mai

  • Compact, walkable gay area. Easy to bar-hop without transport.
  • Drag and cabaret culture is genuinely strong for a city of Chiang Mai's size.
  • Mixed energy: tourist-friendly venues + local-leaning venues + expat-quiet venues all in one district.
  • Cooler weather (compared to Bangkok and Pattaya) makes walking the strip pleasant.
  • Less aggressive ladyboy-show tourism focus than Pattaya. The drag and trans community here is more integrated rather than commodity-tourism.
