Its centrepiece is a massive brick chedi begun in the 1390s and left at its broken height after a 16th-century earthquake, never rebuilt. The temple once held the Emerald Buddha that now sits in Bangkok. It stands on Prapokklao Road, a few minutes west of Tha Phae Gate and central to any old-city temple walk. Open from early morning until about 10:30pm, so it is one of the few temples worth seeing lit at night. Go before 9am or after 6pm to avoid the tour crowds and midday heat. Entry is 40 baht for foreign visitors.
