The best Japanese food in Chiang Mai (2026): sushi, ramen, izakaya and yakiniku

Chiang Mai has a deep Japanese food scene, from proper sushi counters and ramen bars to izakaya and grill-your-own yakiniku. The best Japanese restaurants in the city, by type, with what they are known for and what to expect.

Chiang Mai is a long way from the sea, but it has one of the best Japanese food scenes of any inland Asian city its size. A large, long-settled Japanese community has brought proper sushi counters, ramen specialists, izakaya pubs, and tabletop yakiniku grills, mostly clustered around Nimman and Santitham, and almost all of it costs a fraction of what you would pay in Japan. This guide covers the best of it, by type, with what each place is known for.

For the wider food scene, see our food guide hub and the best restaurants guide. For the local specialties, our northern Thai food guide.

Sushi and sashimi

For an inland city, the sushi is excellent, and the value is remarkable.

  • Sushi Umai: A popular, well-rated sushi spot offering quality fish at fair prices.
  • Sushi Jiro: A reliable favourite for sets and a la carte sushi.
  • Sushi Ichiban: Good value sushi, popular for lunch sets.
  • Sumi to Sushi: A more careful, counter-style experience for sushi lovers.

For the freshest fish, go to a dedicated sushi specialist rather than a general Japanese restaurant, and try lunch sets for the best value.

Ramen

The ramen scene is healthy, with proper long-cooked broths and several styles:

Expect tonkotsu, shoyu, miso, and spicy variations, mostly around Nimman and Santitham, at 150 to 300 baht a bowl.

Izakaya

Okada Izakaya is the standout: a lively Japanese pub with an extensive menu of grilled skewers (yakitori), sashimi, and snacks to go with beer and sake. It is the place for a group, a relaxed evening of grazing and drinking the Japanese way. Several smaller izakaya dot Nimman and Santitham too.

Yakiniku (Japanese barbecue)

Grill your own marinated meat over a tabletop fire:

  • Aji Yakiniku: A popular yakiniku spot with quality cuts and buffet options.
  • Havaii Yakiniku: Another well-rated grill, good for groups.

For the wider grill-and-hotpot buffet world (Korean BBQ, shabu, mookata), see our buffets guide.
