Chiang Mai is not a megaclub city, and anyone expecting Bangkok or the islands will recalibrate fast. What it does have is a compact, fun, affordable dance scene: one genuinely big and beloved club, a cheap-and-loud backpacker cluster, a handful of EDM and hip-hop rooms, and one famous late venue for when everything else has shut. This guide covers where to dance, what each place is like, what it costs, and how a night actually runs.
For the earlier part of the evening, see our best bars hub, rooftop bars, and live music guides.
Warm Up Cafe: the big one
Warm Up Cafe in Nimman is the institution, the club most Chiang Mai nights out are built around. It has run for two decades and packs in a mostly young Thai and mixed crowd across several spaces: a main stage with live Thai bands, separate DJ rooms playing hip-hop and EDM, and an outdoor garden to cool off in. It is big, energetic, and polished by Chiang Mai standards.
- Crowd: Young, mostly Thai, students and twenty-somethings, plus a mix of travellers.
- Music: Live Thai bands on the main stage, hip-hop and EDM in the DJ rooms.
- When it fills: From around 10pm to 11pm; winds down around 1am to 2am.
- Cost: Usually free or low to enter; spend is on drinks. Buying spirits by the bottle is common and pricier than ordering individually.
The Zoe in Yellow cluster: backpacker dancing
Zoe in Yellow anchors a cluster of cheap, loud, open-late bars in the northeast corner of the Old City, the closest thing Chiang Mai has to a party street. Open-air dance floors, buckets, cheap beer, and a young international crowd that builds after midnight. It is unpretentious fun if that is what you want, and genuinely rowdy by the small hours, so it is not for everyone. The neighbouring bars in the same corner keep the energy going across several venues.
- Crowd: Backpackers and young travellers.
- Music: Mainstream dance, pop, reggae, whatever fills the floor.
- When: Builds after midnight; runs later than most.
- Cost: Cheap. Buckets ฿200 to ฿300, beers from ฿100.
EDM and hip-hop rooms
Beyond Warm Up's DJ rooms, dedicated electronic and hip-hop spots like Myst, Infinity, and Differ run club nights with DJs, lights, and a proper dance-floor feel, mostly in and around Nimman. The scene is smaller than Bangkok's but active, and it peaks around guest-DJ events and one-off parties, so it pays to watch venue social media before you go.
Spicy: the late after-club
When the bars and clubs close, the night drifts to Spicy. It is the long-running after-everything-else club, running well past official hours with mainstream dance and hip-hop and a mixed, sometimes chaotic late crowd. Spicy is an institution rather than a polished venue: people go for the late hours and the story, not the sound system. Keep an eye on your drink and belongings as you would at any late spot, and treat it as the nightcap rather than the main event.
How a big night runs
- 8pm: Pre-drinks at a bar or rooftop, dinner.
- 10pm to 11pm: To Warm Up Cafe (or an EDM room) as it fills.
- 1am to 2am: Clubs wind down; move to the Zoe in Yellow cluster for more dancing.
- 2am onward: Spicy for the late hours, if you have it in you.
Because the city is compact, hopping between Nimman and the Old City is a short Grab ride or songthaew, usually ฿60 to ฿150.
Practical notes
- Closing times vary and tighten around holidays, elections, and alcohol-restricted dates. See our honest-reality guide for the full picture.
- Dress smart-casual for Warm Up and the EDM rooms; the Zoe cluster is fully casual.
- Carry your ID/passport copy; some venues check, and the legal drinking age is 20.
- Do not ride a scooter after drinking. Use Grab or a songthaew. This is the single most important safety call of the night.
- Watch your drink and valuables at the late, crowded venues, as anywhere.
The bottom line
Set expectations right and Chiang Mai's dance scene is a good time: Warm Up for the main event, Zoe for cheap backpacker energy, the Nimman rooms for EDM and hip-hop, and Spicy for the after-hours. It is compact, affordable, and friendly. Plan the whole night with our best bars hub, and read the honest-reality guide for closing times, prices, and staying safe.
