Live music in Chiang Mai (2026): jazz, blues, reggae and where to catch a great set

The North Gate jam that spills onto the street, soulful blues at the night bazaar, riverside bands, reggae dens and Thai indie. Where to find live music in Chiang Mai any night of the week, what each venue is like, and when to turn up.

For a city its size, Chiang Mai has a remarkable live-music scene. On any given night you can squeeze into a tiny jazz bar where the band plays inches from your beer, catch soulful blues at the night bazaar, eat dinner to a house band by the river, or sway through a reggae set near the moat. It is intimate, mostly free to walk into, and built on a genuine community of musicians. This guide covers where to go, what each place is like, and when to turn up.

Jazz: the North Gate and beyond

The North Gate Jazz Co-Op

The North Gate Jazz Co-Op is the heart of live music in Chiang Mai and, for many, the single best night out in the city. It is tiny, a small corner bar by the old north gate of the Old City, and on a good night the crowd spills out onto the street while the band plays inches away inside. The standard is genuinely high, and the famous open-jam night (traditionally Tuesdays) draws local and visiting musicians to play together in an electric, packed-to-the-walls atmosphere.

  • When: Music most nights from around 9pm; the jam night (usually Tuesday) is the legendary one.
  • Cover: None; just buy drinks.
  • Tip: Go early (by 8:30pm to 9pm) for any chance of a seat. Embrace the squeeze and the street-corner overflow; it is part of the experience.

More jazz

Moment's Notice Jazz Club and The Mellowship Jazz Club offer more jazz in a slightly calmer, more seated setting than the North Gate crush, good options if you want to actually sit down and listen. Both draw a music-literate crowd and skilled players.

Blues

Boy Blues Bar, upstairs at the Kalare night bazaar off Chang Klan Road, is the city's standout blues venue: tight house musicians, a warm, mixed crowd, and the kind of playing that keeps people in their seats past closing. A great pairing with a wander through the Night Bazaar earlier in the evening. No cover; normal bar prices.

Reggae

Roots Rock Reggae is the long-running reggae den, and the genre threads through several moat-side and backpacker bars too, especially around the THC Rooftop and Zoe in Yellow corner of the Old City. Relaxed, friendly, and a good change of pace from the jazz and blues rooms.

Live music pubs

For singalong covers, classic rock, and a pub atmosphere, spots like Sax Music Pub and UN Irish Pub run house bands and a sociable, all-comers crowd. Less about virtuosity, more about a fun, beery night with music you know.

Riverside: dinner and a band

Along the Ping river, the long-running Riverside Bar & Restaurant and The Good View pair dinner with house bands playing Thai and Western covers through the evening. It is the relaxed, all-ages face of Chiang Mai live music: families, older travellers, and locals out celebrating, with a river breeze and a long menu. Book a riverside table at weekends; these are institutions and they fill.

Thai indie and local bands

To hear popular Thai live acts, Warm Up Cafe in Nimman is the main stage, regularly featuring Thai bands across pop, rock, and indie alongside its DJ rooms. Smaller bars around Nimman, Santitham, and the university area host indie and local acts, and touring Thai artists play one-off gigs worth watching venue social media for. This is where you catch the music young Thais actually listen to.

The bottom line

Live music might be the best thing about going out in Chiang Mai. It is intimate, skilled, mostly free, and there is something on every night. Start at the North Gate at least once, find your own favourite among the blues and reggae rooms, and treat a riverside dinner-and-band night as the gentle counterpoint.
