Where to stay in Chiang Mai (2026): the best area for every kind of traveller

The temple-filled Old City for first-timers, trendy Nimman for nomads and foodies, the tranquil Riverside for couples and families, cheap Santitham for backpackers: Chiang Mai's areas suit very different people. The complete guide to where to stay, by who you are.

Chiang Mai does not have one best place to stay; it has the right place for the kind of traveller you are. A first-timer who wants temples on the doorstep, a digital nomad chasing cafes and coworking, a couple after a riverside resort, and a backpacker counting baht all want different neighbourhoods, and the city serves each beautifully. This guide is the map: the main areas, who each suits, and links to a deeper guide for every kind of traveller.

This is the hub of our where-to-stay cluster. The deeper guides cover staying as a first-timer, with family, as a couple, as a digital nomad, on a budget, and in luxury. For the area-by-area data, see our neighbourhood guide.

The Old City: for first-timers and culture

The square, moat-ringed historic centre is where most first-time visitors stay, and for good reason: around 30 temples, the Sunday Walking Street, markets, cafes, and restaurants are all within walking distance. It is atmospheric, central, and easy. Accommodation ranges from backpacker hostels to charming boutique hotels in old teak houses like Tamarind Village. Best for a classic first Chiang Mai trip. See our first-timer guide.

Nimman: for nomads and foodies

West of the Old City, Nimman (Nimmanhaemin) is the trendy, modern quarter: the best cafes, restaurants, rooftop bars, coworking spaces, malls, and a young, international crowd. It is the digital-nomad heartland and a foodie's base, a little pricier and more polished than the Old City. Design hotels like U Nimman and Akyra Manor sit here. See our nomad guide.

The Riverside: for couples, families and luxury

Along the Ping river east of the centre, the Riverside is Chiang Mai's most tranquil and romantic area, home to many of its finest hotels and resorts with river views, leafy grounds, and a relaxed, upscale feel. It is the pick for couples, families wanting space and a pool, and luxury travellers. Landmark properties include 137 Pillars House, Anantara, and Ping Nakara. See our couples and luxury guides.

Santitham and the budget areas

Santitham, just north of Nimman, is the best-value area: cheap guesthouses, apartments, and local food, popular with budget travellers and long-stay nomads. The Night Bazaar area and Old City hostels also offer affordable beds close to the action. See our budget and hostels guide.
