The grandest nature around Chiang Mai is in its national parks: the cloud-forested roof of Thailand, a sea of cloud glowing at dawn, river gorges, and forested peaks, all within a couple of hours of the city. This guide covers the parks worth your time, Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep-Pui, Huai Nam Dang, and the rest, with what to see, when to go, and the fees.
For the wider picture, see our nature getaways hub; for trekking the parks, our trekking guide.
Doi Inthanon: the roof of Thailand
Doi Inthanon National Park, about two hours southwest, is the headline. Built around the highest peak in the country (2,565 m), it packs in:
- The summit (a short walk from the car park) and the cloud-forest Ang Ka boardwalk.
- The twin royal pagodas with their cool-climate gardens and views.
- The Kew Mae Pan nature trail along a dramatic ridge (guided, in season).
- Waterfalls: Wachirathan, Sirithan, and Mae Ya.
- Mae Klang Luang rice terraces and Karen and Hmong villages and the royal project.
A full day, genuinely cold at the top in the cool season, so carry layers. It is easiest as a guided day tour if you do not drive.
Doi Suthep-Pui: the city's mountain
Doi Suthep-Pui National Park sits on Chiang Mai's western edge, the most accessible park. It holds Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the Doi Pui summit and Hmong village, the Monk's Trail and mountain-bike trails, Bhubing Palace gardens, and waterfalls like Huay Kaew. Combine a temple, a viewpoint, a village, and a waterfall in a half to full day, minutes from the city.
Huai Nam Dang: the sea of cloud
Huai Nam Dang National Park, on the Chiang Mai-Pai road, is famous for the Doi Kiew Lom viewpoint, where at dawn in the cool season a sea of cloud fills the valleys and glows at sunrise, an iconic northern sight. People camp or arrive pre-dawn for it. The park also has hot springs, forest, and viewpoints. The cloud sea is best from November to February. Often combined with a Pai trip.
Gorges and reservoirs
- Ob Khan National Park and Ob Luang: river gorges and quieter trails southwest, good for a half-day away from crowds.
- Pha Chor (Mae Wang): dramatic eroded canyon pillars, a striking, lesser-known landscape.
- Sri Lanna National Park: a large reservoir and forest to the north, with floating raft houses (see our lakes guide).

The bottom line
The national parks are the grandest nature near Chiang Mai: Doi Inthanon for the full mountain day, Doi Suthep-Pui for the easy escape, and Huai Nam Dang for the dawn cloud sea. Go in the cool season, carry cash and layers, and start early. Pair them with our villages and viewpoints and nature stays guides.
